I got a chance to do a Red Sonja variant cover, and I took it!!  Gail Simone for the win.  Will be in shops January 15, in issue 7.  You can order either cover, but you may just have to get both because Jenny Frison is amazing.
Drawing this gave me fond memories of a friend I made at San Diego, early on in my career.  I was doing Fool’s Gold for Tokyopop, and hadn’t really laid eyes on superhero comics, but this gal dressed as Red Sonja got my book signed and we started talking as, well, I wasn’t so busy back then!  Good artist, too.  She explained to me that sometimes men thought she wore the costume for the attention and would get a bit touchy for photos—when really, she was very inspired by the character.  She was Ukrainian gal named Lyuba who lived in Florida—and I hear Red Sonja is supposedly Ukrainian, too.
So I guess when I drew this my goal was to portray the total bad-ass and savage, doesn’t-need-anyone chick that Lyuba had described.
